2007 Hurrah Syrah

We source our syrah fruit from the Fox Hill Vineyard about 25 miles south of our winery here in Elkton. Though warmer than us, this is still a somewhat cool site for the syrah variety. For us, this means that the fruit retains a wonderful peppery spiciness which is lost when grown in warmer climates. In 2007 we decided to use some of the same fruit that goes to our table wine production for use in this port style dessert wine. Port is a fortified wine made by adding distilled spirits to fermenting must, increasing the alcohol and stopping the fermentation with residual sugar. We have some of our pinot noir custom distilled for this purpose.

This wine's aroma opens with pepper and pie spices featuring licorice and cloves. The fruit is a warming and sensuous blend of currants, blackberries and strawberry jam. The flavors abound with dark cherries, mocha, cassis and honey. The wine has a very full mouthfeel and a very long and lingering finish. Not too sweet, we find this wine compliments very well blue veined cheeses, dried fruits, toasted pecans and hazlenuts. Or, it is killer with flourless chocolate decadence.
